“Rather it was the specter of writing and literature — literature! — transforming an ordinary Saturday night in the neighborhood into a carnival of sorts. Up and down Valencia Street, crowds overflowed out of open doorways, and between readings, people hustled from one event to another or gathered on street corners clutching red Lit Crawl maps like participants in a mammoth scavenger hunt.”

– New York Times

On the heels of San Francisco’s wildly successful Lit Crawl, first inaugurated in 2002, Litquake’s New York version debuted in 2008, and quickly attracted a rabid audience of lit fans who flock to the East Village and Lower East Side to attend one or more of 15-plus free literary events that take place over the course of three hours, followed by a blow-out afterparty. Litquake’s Lit Crawl allows a group of literary-minded organizations to curate their own events-within-an-event, creating a literary melting pot of epic proportions. NYC attendance in 2010 was 800. Attendance for Litquake’s 2010 SF crawl – a 50-venue finale of a nine-day yearly literary festival with more than 14,000 audience members – reached more than 5,300.
