Lit Crawl Comes to Iowa City

Lit Crawl returns to Iowa City this spring as part of the annual Mission Creek Festival — a celebration of music, literature, food, and art. This year’s Lit Crawl Iowa City, featuring writers and publishers from around the country, will invade downtown for three hours of readings featuring more than 60 authors representing over 16 publishers, including Coffee House Press, POETRY Magazine, Curbside Splendor, Spork Press, Black Ocean, Forklift Ohio, H_NGM_N, Rescue Press, A Strange Object, Hobart, Wag’s RevueMAKE MagazineGraze Magazine, HTMLGIANT, Canarium, Ninth Letter, cookNscribble, Artifice Books, the Iowa Review, and Red Hen Press. This three-hour tour will take you across and into a number of Iowa City’s small businesses, where you’ll hear fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and translations from some of today’s best writers.

Mission Creek Festival is in its 9th year in Iowa City. As always, writers, small presses, and literary journals from across the country will appear alongside acts such as Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Jason Isbell, Of Montreal, The Head and the Heart, comedian Hannibal Buress, William Elliott Whitmore, Earth, Kishi Bashi, Warpaint, !!!, Oneohtrix Point Never, Nat Baldwin, Weekend, Wolf Eyes, The Pines, & many more, including a full slate of film screenings at Iowa City’s downtown FilmScene movie theatre, five marquee food events in local restaurants, a tech conference, and in-store performances throughout the week.

This year’s festival will host 30 literary events in venues throughout downtown Iowa City. These include readings by emerging authors, book prize winners, a publishers’ 20th anniversary celebration, a day-long book fair held in a music venue with free beer samples from New Belgium, a lit/rock show hosted by Nashville’s Third Man Records, and other literary-crossover events in food, film, and more. Participating authors include Rachel Kushner, Brian Evenson, Lindsay Hunter, Molly O’Neill, Jennifer Percy, Kyle Minor, Leslie Jamison, Tim Kinsella, Janaka Stucky, Michelle Wildgen, Bernard Cooper, T. Geronimo Johnson, Bill Hillman, Jamaal May, Jac Jemc, Tom Williams, Daniela Olszewska, Adam Fell, Tarfiah Faizullah, Elisa Gabbert, D. Foy, Rauan Klassnik, Ben Fama, and many more writers from Iowa City, the Midwest, and across the country.

Lit Crawl Iowa City is a co-presentation with the Litquake Foundation. San Francisco’s Litquake literary festival runs October 11-19, 2013, with annual Lit Crawls in San Francisco,Manhattan, Brooklyn, Seattle, Los Angeles, Iowa City, and Austin.
