Five Things asks five brave and talented artist-people to concoct a new five-minute piece (anything from prose to poem to performance) using humor and a central theme.  The theme for this special Lit Crawl show will be Cocktails. Kathleen Flinn, Mat Johnson, Hillary Jordan, Erin Morgenstern, and Hillary Jordan. Moderated by Lesley Clayton and Brittany Callender.

Kathleen Flinn’s most recent book is The Kitchen Counter Cooking School: How A Few Simple Lessons Transformed Nine Culinary Novices into Fearless Cooks.  Flinn has been a writer and journalist for 20 years, and her first book, The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry, was a finalist in the Washington State Book Awards.

Mat Johnson is the author of the novel Pym, an epic mash-up of literary criticism, metafiction, dark humor, and allegory. Johnson teaches creative writing at the University of Houston, and has written other works of fiction such asDrop and Hunting in Harlem.

Hillary Jordan’s most recent novel, When She Woke, takes place in a  chillingly dystopian future Texas.  Jordan is also the author of Mudbound, which was named one of the top ten debut novels of the decade by Paste magazine.

Erin Morgenstern is a writer and multimedia artist who describes her work as “fairy tales in one way or another.”  Her debut novel, The Night Circus, is now in its first printing.

Dominic Smith is the author of Bright and Distant Shores, his most recent book, as well as The Mercury Visions of Louis Daguerre and The Beautiful Miscellaneous.  Smith is a graduate of the Michener Center for Writers and makes his home in Austin.

Moderator Lesley Clayton’s fiction and essays have appeared in Esopus, Spork Press, and Pop Matters, among others.  She and Brittany Callender cohost Five Things, a live reading series in Austin.
